Governor Josh Shapiro has issued new standards for data centers in the Commonwealth.
The new Governor’s Responsible Infrastructure Development (GRID) standards will require developers to submit applications to state agencies on how they will meet four standards.
To meet the standards, the data center must “protect energy affordability, promoting transparency and community engagement, supporting the workforce and economic development, and protecting the environment.”
If the proposals cannot meet these standards, they will not qualify tax exemptions. Shapiro is also requesting Harrisburg pass a bill that would force companies to use money saved from tax exemptions on public priorities.
The governor has also introduced a new online toolkit for municipalities on how to navigate data center proposals.
Along with executive action, several bills are being proposed in Harrisburg that would regulate data centers.
