Over 30 Butler Township residents took part in a nationwide initiative Tuesday to connect law enforcement and neighbors.
“I think in Butler Township we have a good relationship with pretty much all our residents,” Police Chief John Hays said. “Tonight is just another thing to reassure that relationship that we have with them; to actually get out and meet and see the officers that are actually working for them and answering their calls is a good situation to be in.”
National Night Out is an annual event promoting police-community partnerships and camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer. Butler Township police officers, firefighters and township commissioners met with residents in the Homeacre area of Butler Township Tuesday.
According to Hays, communication is one way residents can help reduce crime and limit the amount of illegal activity in their neighborhoods.
“We have 21 officers in the department and typically three to four officers per shift,” Hays said. “That’s only three or four sets of eyes. If the community sees something and reports it to us, they can be our eyes and ears. Things that we may not catch ourselves or be aware of, they can tell us and then we can look into or put more attention to it.”
