The Pennsylvania State Police Camp Cadet program will continue thanks, in part, to the generosity of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Dave Soltesz- President of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation- presented $5,000 checks Wednesday to each of the 10 camp cadet programs run by various state police barracks across our region.
“I don’t think anybody really understands the dedication that these state police officers have for this program,” Soltese said during a press conference.
Camp Cadet was started in the 70s by a retired Pennsylvania State Police trooper. It is an annual summer camp for kids who are interested in police work.
Trooper Ron Kesten heads up the program in Butler County. He says it not only helps teach discipline, but also aids in improving the police-community relationship.
“The core is to build that good relationship between the youth and law enforcement,” Kesten said Wednesday. “Butler County seems to be a place where people still do have a lot of respect for law enforcement.”
Kesten said about 100 kids participated in this year’s program in our area.
