There are now nearly 40 people from our region who have traveled to Texas to assist the Red Cross with relief efforts as a result of Hurricane Harvey.
The Red Cross says 37 people and four local emergency response vehicles have been deployed from western Pennsylvania, including some volunteers from Butler County.
What can you do to help from up here? The Red Cross is offering several suggestions.
-Become a Red Cross volunteer. If you volunteer now, you will most likely not be deployed to Texas but you will be trained to serve your local community and then will be eligible to deploy during future relief operations.
-Make a monetary donation. The Red Cross says this is the best way to support the relief effort. Donate online at redcross.org, send a check to your local Red Cross office or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
-Donate blood. The Red Cross says summer always brings a shortage of blood and a disaster such as Hurricane Harvey often makes the situation worse.
