Alton R. Opitz, 81, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 21, 2017 at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.
He was born February 6, 1936 in Harrisville, Pennsylvania the son of the late Harold R. Opitz and the late Florence M. Grossman Opitz.
Alton graduated from Harrisville High School in 1953 and Grove City College with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked as an Electrical Engineer for the Magnetics Division of Spang and Company for 41 years before retiring in 1998. During that time, Alton worked in R &D; developing a number of the company’s products and processes and received a patent for one of these products. He later served in a number of management and sales positions in East Butler. Other sales positions were in California and Florida. Alton was a member of Community Alliance Church. The Opitz’s moved to Florida in 1985, living in West Palm Beach, and then spent 15 years in Naples. He was active at First Baptist Church in Naples at that time. Alton enjoyed working for Habitat for Humanity while in Naples, handyman work, and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn L. Opitz, whom he married on September 6, 1957; one daughter, Cheryl L. Lashway and her husband Marc of Bellingham, WA; one son, Brian R. Opitz and his wife Kayce of West Sunbury, PA; four grandchildren, Bradley Opitz, Brooke Opitz, Justin Wehrli, and Jensen Wehrli; and one brother, H. Bruce Opitz and his wife Nancy of Grove City, PA.
There will be no public visitation.
Private burial took place in the Butler County Memorial Park.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Rd, Butler, PA 16001from 2 – 3 pm.
A Memorial Service will be held immediately following at 3 pm on Wednesday, October 25 at Community Alliance Church with the Reverend Dr. Dennis Krajacic, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Rd., Butler, PA 16001.
