Butler Township has approved a plan to improve the health of the forest at Preston Park.
The commissioners approved a plan Monday night from forester and local resident Robert Carlberg that is at no cost to the township.
Following a report about the state of many dead and dying trees posing a hazard in the park, Carlberg suggested that over the course of two or three days this winter that 26 conifers and 11 hardwoods be removed. Since the work will be done quickly and in winter, the plan is that it will not impact visitors very much, if at all.
All profits from the sale of trees that are removed will go toward covering the expense of removal. It could take years to clear out all the trees that need to go but if this trial is successful, it could continue into the future. Even though professionals will be doing the removal, Carlberg stressed there will still be lots of help needed from volunteers.
