Butler Township will begin the search for a replacement after an important administrator made known his intent to retire.
Butler Township Fire Marshal Larry Christy submitted his letter of resignation on Tuesday and the commissioners were informed of the letter later that night. Christy’s last day in the office will be April 6 but he will be a Township employee through May 5.
According to Township Manager Ed Kirkwood, this decision does not come as a surprise and a plan is in place to find a replacement and train that person. The position will be advertised through the end of January. Interviews will be conducted in February. A candidate will hopefully be offered the position to start at the beginning of March in order to work with Christy for his final month on the job.
Christy is paid $62,000 per year in this full-time position but Kirkwood said a salary will not be attached to the advertised job posting. A salary offer will depend on background, experience and qualifications. The position of Fire Marshal investigates fires to determine cause and performs regular inspections on commercial buildings. Christy has also helped township residents by acquiring grant money through sources like The Hodge Fund that is used to provide free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Christy has served as Butler Township Fire Marshal for ten years. Before that, he was the Butler City Fire Chief.
