Why is the cold weather so dangerous?
It seems pretty obvious, but there is a science to it. According to the National Weather Service, it all comes down to wind.
The average temperature of the human body is 98.6 degrees and under calm wind conditions, the body radiates heat, creating a layer of warmth between the human skin and the cold surroundings.
But when it’s windy, the moving air breaks up this insulating layer and heat is moved away from our bodies. Hypothermia begins when our body temperature drops two to four degrees.
The National Weather Service expects temperatures to remain in the teens on Wednesday with a “feels like” or wind-chill as cold as -11.
