A new statewide advertising campaign has launched with a goal of encouraging conversations between parents and elementary-aged kids about drinking alcohol.
“The objective of the campaign is to reduce underage drinking by giving parents the information, the tools and the confidence they need to begin having meaningful and effective conversations with their kids about alcohol to head off trial and use of alcohol,” Elizabeth Brassel, the Director of Communications for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, said.
The “Know When. Know How.” campaign is a research-based education and prevention effort designed for parents of kids ages 8 to 12. The PA Liquor Control Board commissioned a survey of more than 500 parents across the state, which found that most parents are not familiar with facts about underage drinking.
Some of those facts might cause parents to have conversations about alcohol with their kids earlier than they were expecting, according to Brassel.
“What we’re finding is some pretty startling things,” she said. “There’s research that suggests one in three kids by the age of 8 has tried alcohol and by the age of 12, that number grows to two in three.”
