Crews still don’t know what caused a fire on Monday that killed two people and completely gutted a Butler City home.
George and Linda Walters lived there and were killed. The home has already been torn down.
Butler City Fire Captain Kevin McAfee said when his crews arrived, there were already flames shooting through the roof. And, when firefighters tried to get inside, they found hoarding conditions which made it even more difficult.
“We initially tried to knock it down from the outside,” McAfee said. “Then we tried to make entry through the front door. We pushed it open and the door only opened partially. It was a bad hoarding situation.”
Since firefighters couldn’t get inside, they attacked the fire from the front porch.
McAfee says one of the firemen partially fell through a hole in the floor. He wasn’t hurt.
Fire officials believe the fire started on the front porch or behind the front door but the cause is still unclear.
