A Butler man is facing multiple felony charges following an alleged attack on his girlfriend using a machete.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Butler City Police, 30-year-old Derek Pope got into an argument with his girlfriend Tuesday morning on Center Avenue.
Police spoke with the victim at Butler Memorial Hospital where she was receiving treatment for injuries consistent with an assault. The victim told police that the assault occurred over the course of about two hours after she told Pope she was leaving him. She stated Pope used a machete to cut her arm and stab holes in the walls. She also stated Pope strangled her and threw her around the room multiple times.
Pope has been charged with felony aggravated assault, felony strangulation, and misdemeanor criminal mischief for allegedly throwing a brick through the back window of the victim’s vehicle as she was trying to leave the scene.
