Slippery Rock University turned 129 years old on Monday.
March 26, 1889 was the first day of classes at what was then Slippery Rock State Normal School. During that first term, there were 168 students enrolled, and two-thirds of the students were from Butler County.
Tuition was $14 per term and $32 if you needed room and board.
The school was renamed Slippery Rock State Teachers College in the late 1920s; renamed again to Slippery Rock State College in 1960, and finally became Slippery Rock University in 1983. Enrollment now exceeds 8,300 students.
