An alleged incident involving “hateful rhetoric” at Mars High School is under investigation.
In a letter to parents on Monday, Superintendent Wesley Shipley said the incident- which he described as a ‘difficult situation’- resulted in a physical altercation with another student.
Shipley did not identify the students involved and did not elaborate on what we said- but did say “appropriate discipline will be pursued after the investigation is complete.” Local law enforcement has been contacted and is currently investigating as well.
“Let me first say that hate speech, of any kind, has no place at our schools. Neither is violence tolerated. When situations such as this come to light, they are taken seriously and investigated completely. We also involve local law enforcement in these investigations, as we have done in this situation,” Shipley said in the letter.
Some Mars students said they wore green on Monday to voice their disapproval of the administration initially calling the incident an act of free speech.
“As a student body, we should not be subjected to racial discrimination, or any type discrimination against race, gender, or sexuality,” student Nicholas Weber wrote on Twitter. ” ‘Freedom of Speech,’ or what it is being called by the administration, is pure hate and no one should have to listen to that type of speech.”
