On the heels of Memorial Day, a local group is working to bring beauty back to one of Butler’s parks dedicated to honoring veterans.
Doughboy Park is located at the corner of West New Castle and Mercer streets in the city of Butler, at the bottom of New Castle Hill. The park includes a memorial honoring local veterans lost in World War I.
Metha Hillard lives in the area and noticed the park could use some sprucing.
“I live here in the city…I often ride past the park and it kind of looks forgotten,” Hillard said. “I started talking with other members of the gardening club and we decided it’s a perfect time to make it look a little better.”
The club contacted the city and received approval to plant flowers at the park on Wednesday.
The Oak Hills Gardening Club was founded in 1943 and currently has about 30 members. They are holding a plant sale fundraiser this Saturday, June 2, 2018, at the Tanglewood Center in Lyndora beginning at 9 a.m.
“This sale is where we get our money to spend on projects, like Doughboy Park,” she said.
In addition to the plantings, the group plans to take a closer look at the park to see what can be done in the coming years to restore the special remembrance of that area of the city. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
