Runners will take to the street this weekend for the annual Butler Road Race.
The road race has been around for more than 40 years but this is the first year under a new leadership team. The race is now presented by the Butler YMCA.
“We’re very excited. The Butler Road Race has been such a staple in the Butler community. The race was run by its own volunteer board, Mike Franko and Mike Blessel being a huge part of that, and they decided they wanted to retire,” Francine Mills, Executive Director of the YMCA said. “They’ve passed it on and we’re still close friends and they’ve been helping us in the process, but we’re super excited to be able to take on this tradition.”
The race is Saturday, June 23 and includes two races: a 5-mile run and a 2-kilometer run and health walk. Both begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Butler County Courthouse.
“It’s a wonderful community event and we really want to keep the event going. We respect the amount of time, tenure and work these guys have done for a long time and we just think that the event really needs to keep on keeping on,” said Sandy Ihlenfeld, Vice President of Organizational Advancement at the YMCA.
A Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Friday, June 22 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Butler YMCA, to prepare for the race. You can register in person the day of the race to be involved.
