It’s been a rough week of winter weather in Butler County. One local school district was forced to close Thursday for the second day in a row.
Moniteau School District Superintendent Sean Arney said the call was made due- in large part- to the large number of dirt roads around the district.
“Many of our roads are not paved,” Arney said. “The layer of rain made them very, very dangerous.”
Arney said on bad weather days, he is in communication with the district’s bus contractor Campbell Bus Co. before 5 a.m. He said the contractor goes out on the roads to see the conditions exactly where the buses have to travel.
The district was able to notify parents of the closer earlier Thursday than Wednesday because radar showed conditions weren’t going to improve anytime soon.
“We knew it wasn’t going to get any better,” he said.
He hopes students can return to a normal schedule soon, noting Moniteau students were off on Monday becuase of a holiday, they had a delay on Tuesday, and then were off school both Wednesday and Thursday.
“I’m ready for the kids to be back in school,” he said.
Moniteau was the only public school district in the county to cancel classes on Thursday.
