The City of Butler is taking a second look at policies that permit solicitation and peddlers, particularly as they relate to people who collect money in the street.
Current city ordinance does not require people who say they are affiliated with religious organizations to obtain permits to solicit donations.
Beyond concerns about the legitimacy of people collecting money, council is also concerned about the safety of people in the streets.
Council has directed City Solicitor Tom Breth to look into the policy currently on the books, as well as what is allowed by law in relation to people asking for money in the street.
Police can issue summary offense citations to those they feel are acting in a way that endangers the safety of themselves or others on the road.
