A local lawmaker is throwing his support behind a proposal that would enact term limits for members of the state House and Senate.
State Representative Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) supports a measure that would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to limit a member of the General Assembly to 12 consecutive years of service in each chamber. That would be six consecutive two-year terms for House members and three consecutive four-year terms for senators.
“This is something I’ve been very passionate about since I took office,” Bernstine said. “I term-limited myself to eight years in the House of Representatives. I don’t believe this should be a career.”
The lawmaker hope that the change would help encourage a legislative environment where ideas, work ethic, and leadership merit are the factors determining success and influence in both chambers.
“I believe career politicians are damaging not only this institution, not only this commonwealth, but this country as a whole,” he said.
Freshman state lawmakers Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) and Mike Jones (R-York) on Tuesday unveiled their proposal to enact term limits for members of the state House and Senate.
