The Butler Transit Authority is looking into purchasing chains for the tires of their five buses that provide commuter service to Pittsburgh.
Executive Director John Paul told the authority Board of Directors during a meeting on Tuesday about a company called On Spot that could provide tire chain systems that go on and off automatically for $2,000 per each CNG coach bus. There is not enough room for the systems on the local service buses.
The authority recently experienced trouble with buses losing traction on Route 8 during a heavy snow and decided to look into the option. If put on seasonally, the chain systems have a 7-8 year lifespan and similar systems are used by vehicles in snow across the country.
Paul said he plans to request funding for the chain systems from PennDOT first and if that is denied, then the board can consider using money from their general fund to pay for the equipment.
