South Butler administrators are asking parents to pay special attention to what their students are bringing to school after two students were disciplined this week for bringing weapons to class.
The incidents happened on back-to-back days, according to Superintendent David Foley.
On Tuesday, a teacher believed two students were vaping in class. A search revealed one of those students had a Juul vaping device in her purse, as well as a small Swiss Army Knife. Both items are prohibited on school grounds.
On Wednesday, two live ammunition rounds were found in the Middle School locker room. No firearm was found with the ammunition. A student was found to have additional ammunition rounds in his pocket. Ammunition is also prohibited on school grounds.
The superintendent believes the students may not have intentionally brought the items to school, but they will be disciplined regardless.
“In an effort to provide a safe learning environment, the district cannot differentiate between items brought with ill intent and those brought accidentally. Neither can we differentiate with the consequences,” Foley said in a letter to parents on Wednesday.
Parents and students are reminded to go through their bags and pockets before stepping on school grounds.
