Pennsylvania counties continue to move toward having new voting systems with voter-verifiable paper trails in place for next year’s elections.
Acting Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar says at least 80 percent of the state’s counties report they’ve selected- or are in the process of selecting- new voting systems with voter-verifiable paper trails. Butler is one of them.
Earlier this month, the Butler County Election Bureau was instructed by the commissioners to contract with a company to get a new voting system- one that will be paper-based. It’s the hope the new system will be ready to go for the 2019 general election this November.
Voters will use a pen and paper to select their candidates, and then personally scan their ballot and watch it fall into a secure ballot box. Votes will be tabulated electronically, but there will be paper ballots to reference should there be a discrepancy.
