With the possibility of heavy rains across many areas of western Pennsylvania over the next several days, the American Red Cross is recommending that everyone be prepared for severe spring weather.
Thunderstorms are expected to move through the area Friday and Saturday which could result in minor flooding and other storm-related damage.
It’s important that residents make sure any storm drains on their property don’t have any blockages and will collect most of the storm water. Getting rid of any leaves, grass cuttings, and other garden debris will help prevent the drains from being blocked during the storm.
Citizens should also ensure that their entire property is prepared for the storm. Secure any loose objects around your property such as garden tables and chairs. Also, do not forget to check the roof for any missing tiles – if you see any major issues, be sure to contact someone like ATS Exteriors of Broomfield to get them repaired before the bad weather hits.
A weather-related “watch” means conditions are favorable for an event to occur, while a weather-related “warning” means a situation has developed and extra precaution or immediate action should be taken.
Assembling an Emergency Preparedness Kit containing water, food, medication, flashlights, radio, batteries, a multipurpose tool, cell phone charger, copies of important personal documents and family contact numbers is suggested, as is placing the kit in an easily accessible place.
On top of this, you should check your home after the storm has passed to check for any damage it caused. If your property suffered from any damage, it’s important you get the right professionals out to make the required repairs.
As the roof of the house is most prone to damage due to the storm, it’s important that all residents learn more about the signs that point to the roof needing urgent repairs. Getting all the necessary work done, whether it’s fixing leaks or other major repairs, becomes pertinent for homeowners post the storm.
Every homeowner must ensure due diligence after the storm; first and foremost, ensuring that all family members are safe, and secondly, inspecting every part of the house in case there has been major damage. Continuing to live in the house in spite of serious damage can be very hazardous, so evacuate immediately if you feel that there has been any major structural damage, and find alternative accommodation. Also call in professionals as soon as possible.
