The acting attorney general is warning people about the new “secret shopper scam.”
Michelle Henry says that scammers are sending text messages, emails, and letters inviting people to a research project where they act as a secret shopper.
The recruiter then sends a check worth more than the items you buy, so you keep the rest as a bonus. The scammer then asks you to deposit the check and reimburse them the difference in gift cards.
The check won’t clear and victims can be defrauded of money.
Anyone can submit a scam related complaint to the attorney general’s office by calling 1-800-441-2555 or visiting their website.
