It’s a great weekend to enjoy some outdoor activities at Moraine State Park.
First, a Star Party is planned for Saturday night from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Beach Area on the North Shore of Moraine. Volunteers from the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will bring their privately owned telescopes to help participants learn how to spot a few planets and constellations. Those planning to attend should bring a lawn chair or blanket as well as bug spray. No smoking, flashlights, light-up toys, or cell phones at this free event.
Then, a “Heron and Kingfisher Paddle” will take place on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the McDanels Launch Area. Park staff will share more about these beautiful birds in this area and lead a nature-based exploration of the tributaries of Lake Arthur which could include sightings of wildlife. This event is for ages 12 and older with those under 18 to be accompanied by an adult. Participants can bring their own kayaks. A limited number of kayaks are available. Life jackets are required. Call the park office to reserve a spot or for more information.
