Local American Legion Posts are once again taking part in an annual contest that could see a student win thousands of dollars in scholarships.
The Pennsylvania American Legion is hosting their 89th Annual Essay contest for grades 9-12.
Every local American Legion Post will pick one winner, whose essay will be submitted to the state level. This year’s topic is “Why the first Amendment Matters to me?”
Essays must be at least 500 words. The deadline to turn in the essay to your local American Legion post is January 9.
There is also an oratorical contest that could see a student win $25,000 in a national scholarship.
John Baker started running the scholarship programs two years ago and sees it as a great opportunity for local students.
“I’m in charge of both the oratory and essay programs for Butler County and the district we’re a part of. These are fantastic opportunities for kids to get money for college and trade schools. We got a lot of chances to get involved,” Baker said.
