Over 50 employees at the newly merged Independence Health System are now without a job following another round of layoffs.
Tom Chakurda, the chief marketing and communications manager for Independence Health System, told our newsroom that the new health care group “confirms that it has enacted a downsizing of 53 employees.”
The statement also says that “these actions are a reflection of our ongoing and necessary initiatives to address and overcome the economic challenges facing both our system and the healthcare industry.”
Since the merger between Butler Health System and Excela Health on January 1st, the group has reduced their workforce by 226 employees. Officials say that while some employees were laid off, others either resigned or retired.
Independence Health System employs 7,300 workers according to a company spokesman.
