A program through a local company aims to help veterans by offering a specially-trained pet for no cost.
Armstrong sponsors the Healing Heroes program, which pays for trained service dogs to veterans. Organizers of the program say that as veterans return from service and combat they may face new hurdles in life with a disability or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The dogs are trained specifically to help those in need.
“It’s really a life changing effort for these veterans; it literally changes their lives,” O’Donnell said.
But according to Daneen O’Donnell from Armstrong, they are having problems finding veterans in need of service dogs.
“The big thing is we need veterans who think they can use a dog. We have the money for dogs, but we don’t have veterans who need them,” O’Donnell said.
If you are a veteran or know a veteran who could use a dog you can contact Armstrong or directly to Guardian Angles website.
