Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official has reached a deal with five pharmaceutical companies for their roles in fueling the opioid epidemic.
Attorney General Josh Shapiro and three other attorneys general reached the $48 billion agreement with Cardinal Health, McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, Johnson and Johnson, and Teva.
This agreement includes over $22 billion in cash along with $26 billion in medication-assisted treatment, drug provision, and distribution over a period of ten years.
The three major distributors have also agreed to change their policies to reduce the chances of over-distribution of opioids in the future. The two manufacturers will abstain from marketing opioid products. The formula for distributing the cash is still being finalized.
