Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official is encouraging residents to take precautions as scammers continue to try to trick consumers.
One such ploy is called a tech support scam in which a scammer will call or use online ads resembling security alerts to trick people, especially senior citizens, into providing access to a computer. Real companies will not ask for control of a computer through providing account passwords.
Another scam that has been used recently involves Social Security numbers. A caller will tell a person that their Social Security number has been compromised or suspended. The caller then threatens arrest unless payment is made. Never give out personal information over the phone.
Anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of scams like these is asked to contact the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
