The Butler Area School District is moving forward with the sale of a piece of property in the City of Butler.
At their meeting Monday night, the Butler Area School Board approved the sale of the district’s “old athletic field” to Grace Youth and Family Foundation for a sum of $50,000.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White shared some of the concerns about the property.
“We did do the environmental study through the Community Development Corporation on the field and found that it is also a flood plain,” White said. “So that unfortunately diminished the value. We had it privately appraised and it was appraised at $30,000.
The property is located near Connoquenessing Creek and Butler Motor Transit. Many residents call the area the Junior High Athletic Field but the district plans to consolidate all athletic team practices at the Intermediate and Senior High School sports complexes.
Grace Founder and Butler School Board member Bill Halle is looking forward to continuing to make the space available for community use.
“There is a long list of things that we’re excited about. When the district consolidated the schools, kids lost a lot of green space. The fact that we can have all that acreage and that we could have all the kids there. There’s a number of ideas and my head is spinning at the opportunity,” Halle said.
The bid submitted by Grace was the only one received for the property and the money received will be added to the district’s capital fund.
