Butler Area School District will see increased energy costs after agreeing to a new contract with a supplier but it could have been worse.
The school board approved a new agreement with Direct Energy at a cost of 7.779 cents per kilowatt hour for a term of 48 months beginning next month.
The district previously paid around 5 cents per kilowatt hour under their previous agreement that expires this month but energy prices have been shooting up for everyone.
By committing to the four year deal, the district got the best rate available but if prices were to fall at some point, the district could take advantage of an option called “blend and extend” that would decrease the rate while extending the term.
