Butler County Community College is providing more information about a ransomware attack last month.
On November 24th, College IT staff discovered that “certain devices” connected to the college network had been encrypted with ransomware.
They immediately initiated a response plan that included shutting off certain systems to contain the attack and contacting a third-party forensic cybersecurity firm to install enhanced security tools on network devices.
The forensic firm is assisting the college with an investigation and the college is also cooperating with an FBI investigation. BC3 administrators continue to focus on restoring all services needed by students.
The college does not mention if any money was paid to end the attack and cites ongoing investigations in declining to provide further information.
