A man who survived a suicide attempt off the Golden Gate Bridge is scheduled to make an appearance next week in Butler.
Kevin Hines will present two free public lectures next Monday (Oct. 17th) at Butler County Community College’s Succop Theater. The talks are set for 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
“Every day I get to walk this Earth,” Hines said, “is a gift. Every person I get to meet is the same. I’m grateful to exist. I am grateful to be anywhere. And I share that with the audience as well.”
Hines leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge as a 19-year-old back in September 2000. When he hit the water, Hines shattered three vertebrae. However, he never lost consciousness and was kept afloat by a sea lion until he was rescued by a sea lion.
“The millisecond my hand left the rail, I had instantaneous regret for my actions,” Hines said. “Absolute recognition that I had made the greatest mistake of my life. And that it was too late.”
Hines will discuss his 10-step guide called “The Art of Wellness” in which he says factors in “better brain, mind, behavioral, mental, physical, and spiritual health and well-being.”
The talks come at a time where suicide deaths in Butler County have reached a five-year high. The latest data shows there were 37 suicide deaths in Butler County last year.
