Local residents should be aware of scams that deal with contact tracing of COVID-19.
According to the Pennsylvania Departments of Health and Aging, once a COVID-19 case is confirmed, trained public health staff will conduct interviews for a case investigation to obtain a list of close contacts.
Some scammers are pretending to be contact tracers in order to try to get personal information through phone calls or electronic messages. Contact tracers may ask for verification of date of birth, address, and phone number as well as the date and location if a person has been tested. A contact tracer will never ask for a social security number, bank account information, photographs, videos, or payment of money.
Contact tracers will not say who exposed the person being called in order to keep that information confidential. Contact tracers will also never share information with any local, state, or federal law enforcement agency.
