Vaccines are rolling out to healthcare workers and nursing home patients. But you may be wondering when the general population will have access to the vaccine.
Butler Health System’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Rottinghaus says to expect a tiered system that will prioritize certain demographics among the general population.
“A 93-year-old who is healthy and living in the community and otherwise has some medical problems if not just age that make it more likely to become very ill with this virus will be a higher priority than a 20-year-old,” Rottinghaus said.
Rottinghaus says he also recognizes that the health system will play a vital role in getting the vaccine to vulnerable populations.
“There’s a lot of people out there that really should have the vaccine that are high risk and that are very much patient and community facing. We realize that, and as we get more and more and have almost an almost unlimited stream, we will continue to target those populations that the state deems highest priority, and then just keep going down the list,” Rottinghaus said.
Currently, over 1,900 people have been vaccinated in Butler County according to the Department of Health.
