A bill that will rename the Butler City Post Office has officially passed Congress.
Congressman Mike Kelly proposed the bill, which would honor Andrew Gomer Williams, a Civil War veteran who was thought to be killed in action in 1863.
Williams was found alive four days later on the battlefield and would carry out the rest of his service until 1864.
Williams returned to Butler where he became a lawyer, a state representative, and state senator.
“Andrew Gomer Williams lived a life of service to his community and country, and I am proud to cement his legacy in our nation’s history,” Rep. Kelly said in a statement. “He is a Civil War hero, and he is the definition of what it means to serve others. I would like to thank my colleagues for their support in honoring this heroic man. I also encourage everyone to read his life story. Mr. Williams was a remarkable man.”
The bill passed unanimously in the House; it now moves to the U.S. Senate.
