A local state representative is proposing a change in dairy laws to help prevent dairy farmers from violating laws and regulations.
Currently in state law, when a diary farm violates a law or regulation their license could be suspended or pay a daily fine. But State Representative Marci Mustello wants to see the fines increased.
According to Mustello, suspensions of licenses is rare and by increasing the daily fine of $150 per day to $1,000 per day it will prevent more violations.
Violations would include pricing below minimum pricing, below minimum price biding, late payments to producers, and repeated violations of required report fillings and record keeping provisions.
The bill has been submitted to the Agriculture and rural affairs committee.
