The former Friedman’s grocery store in downtown Butler has been sold.
Local couple Jacquelyn and Joe Gray announced Wednesday they will buy the 14,000 square-foot building on West Brady Street and renovate it, and then move Gateway Engineers into the space.
Gateway- which is currently located on South Main Street- will occupy the majority of the space in the front of the building, and the rest will be made available for lease.
“Gateway plans to relocate to the space from their current Main Street location, which they have outgrown,” Gray said. “The Brady Street property suits their needs with its size and the ground level open floor plan. Gateway wishes to remain in the city and continue to serve the city and other municipalities, as well as the private engineering needs of the Butler and surrounding areas.”
Renovation work is expected to begin in May. The price of the sale was not disclosed.
“I commend Carole Bitter and Nancy Crerar (representing Harold Friedman, Inc. doing business as Friedman’s Freshmarkets) for fighting so hard to maintain the grocery store in the City of Butler,” Gray said. “It is unfortunate to lose this family business that gave so much to the community and served the community for so many years. Jackie and I pride ourselves on saving and improving the buildings in Butler and we believe our work on the former Friedman’s building will save the building and continue its productive contribution to the city.”

Friedman’s Freshmarkets closed their Brady Street location in October 2017. They then closed all of their grocery stores last year.
