Those looking to enjoy North Country National Scenic Trail Day or learn more about local railroad history later this week are invited to join in a couple of events planned for local State Parks.
McConnells Mill park staff will lead a hike along the Slippery Rock Gorge Trail from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Hikers will meet at the Hells Hollow parking lot. This 6.5 mile hike is considered difficult so participants should be in good physical shape and prepared to deal with steep, rocky, and uneven terrain. Participants should also bring a lunch, trail snacks, and plenty of water. Pre-registration is required by visiting the DCNR Calendar of Events website.
Also on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. a talk about the History of the Western Allegheny Railroad will be given on Moraine’s North Shore at McDanel’s Area Pavilion 7. Author Polly Shaw will present a free program about the approximately 30 years at the beginning of the 20th century when coal, limestone, and passengers traveled through the Muddy Creek basin which is now mostly under Lake Arthur. Pre-registration is not required.
