The Butler Area School District will receive funds in connection with the settlement of a class-action lawsuit against a major producer of e-cigarettes.
Butler’s Board of School Directors approved the agreement with JUUL Labs in the Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation that will direct a total of just over $99,000 to be paid to the district.
The money must be used for prevention or intervention programs dealing with deterring vape use among students. Superintendent Dr. Brian White will investigate educational programs and present his choice for spending the money to the board. White did say that the district has tried vape detectors with little beneficial results.
The first installment of this settlement is expected to be paid out sometime later this year but there is no deadline for when the entire settlement must be dispersed. Other districts in Butler County including Seneca Valley, Knoch, Slippery Rock, Karns City, and Moniteau have also approved settlements to receive funds from this lawsuit.
