The Butler Area Public Library is celebrating a very special birthday this weekend.
Saturday marks the 125th anniversary of the library opening its doors in the city of Butler.
Butler Mayor Ben Smith declared Saturday “Butler Area Public Library Day,” and will present a proclamation to library directors.
Library Executive Director Lori Hinderliter says this is a big milestone for the facility.
“It’s wonderful that we’ve been around for 125 years, and I think it brings great hope,” Hinderliter said Friday. “Lots of people will say libraries are obselete but really that is not true.”
She credits the library being able to adapt to changing times as the reason it has continued to flourish.
This marks the launch of a year-long celebration at the library. Next weekend, on Friday, Feb. 22, the public will be invited to celebrate with the library through an open house with refreshments and giveaways.
The library will close on Monday, Feb. 18 for Presidents’ Day and reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 8 a.m.
