The Butler Area School District will be receiving more than $11 million as part of the latest federal recovery plan.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White said a portion of the money must be used for lost learning.
“The way the funding works is that 20 percent of it has to be used to address learning loss. So we are revamping some of our programming for the upcoming year, particularly our English and math at the middle grade levels (7-9),” White said.
White also said there will be money set aside for increased summer learning this year. But he also says that there will be a focus on using this money for long-term improvements.
“The idea is to utilize the funding for long-term investments, not short term staffing. We don’t want to start increasing our spending as a school district, but rather use this money as an investment to try and bring down our operational costs as a long-term benefit of reducing our expenditures and increasing our learning simultaneously,” White said.
White also added that the state receives 10 percent of the funding right off the top, although he noted it’s unclear how that money will be spent or if it will eventually be given back to the district.
Butler however received by far and away the most money out of districts in the county. The next closest was Moniteau at $2.3 million.
- AC Valley $1.5 million
- Freeport $1.3 million
- Karns City $1.8 million
- Mars $1.09 million
- Moniteau $2.3 million
- Pine Richland $1.02 million
- Seneca Valley $2.1 million
- Slippery Rock $2.2 million
- South Butler $1.9 million
The money was distributed based on the low-income population of school districts.
