The Butler City Building sustained damage as a result of last weekend’s heavy rains.
Butler City Councilman Jeff Smith said the city has been having roof work done on the building and unfortunately the roofer’s equipment failed where the seams were put together.
“It happened to fail at the worst possible spot,” Smith said during a Butler City Council meeting on Tuesday. If failed right beside the drain for the roof, so essentially the drain for the roof became the building.”
The building sustained water damage on the second and top floors, and some minimal damage on the first floor and basement.
Smith said the city’s roofing contractor has taken full responsibility for the situation. Insurance adjusters were expected to walk through the building at some point Wednesday. Until then, the city has multiple fans and dehumidifiers working to try and dry out the affected areas.
There will be no cost to the city for this repair work other than the time it has taken for city employees to deal with the effects of the mess, according to officials.
