Butler City Council is exercising a bit of caution regarding discretionary purchases while considering their preliminary 2023 budget.
Although the total amount of the 2023 budget has not yet been made public, Director of Accounts and Finance Councilman Don Shearer anticipates that it will be balanced without the need to raise taxes.
In the meantime, Council approved a motion at their Thursday meeting to direct the City Clerk and all the heads of departments to obtain approval for all expenditures from the Finance Director for the next 90 days.
Councilman Shearer explains about the need for this action.
“Basically we’re just approaching the end of the year here and we have some outstanding grant money that we’re expecting to get in, but it hasn’t come yet,” Shearer said. “We’re just tightening the belt a little bit to make sure we make it to the end of the year when those grant funds come, which will ease the pressure.”
“Until that happens, we just have to watch.”
Council will vote on the preliminary budget at their next meeting later this month. The budget will then be available to the public for 30 days before a vote for final approval sometime before the end of December.
