The City of Butler is exploring entering into an intergovernmental agreement with Butler Township regarding road maintenance.
“We met to think about different ways that the two municipalities can potentially work together when it comes to covering certain streets when it snows,” Kenny Bonus, councilman and director of Butler City’s streets and public improvements said during a city council meeting on Tuesday night.
Bonus met about two weeks ago with Butler Township Commissioner Dave Zarnick and Township Manager Ed Kirkwood, as well as streets employees with both municipalities, to discuss possible cooperation. Kirkwood is drafting the wording of a formal agreement, which is expected to result in reduced costs for both municipalities but, according to Bonus, one important point will be making sure it is fair to all involved.
“The key behind it is to keep it as equitable as possible therefore being fair to the taxpayers. I think that we want to hold that in the forefront,” he said.
Once drafted, the agreement would need to go before both city council and the township board of commissioners for approval.
