Students in the Butler Area School District headed back to class Wednesday morning but one local elementary school wasn’t ready to open its doors.
Summit Township Elementary is still closed as work continues to address the school’s water problems.
The school was connected up to public water earlier this month and now, engineers are waiting for pH and chlorine levels to stabilize so samples can be taken and tested. If lead and copper levels are normal, the school will reopen to students. If levels are still elevated, the interior pipes may have to be replaced.
The school was closed in January after tests showed high levels of lead and copper in the water. The facility used to run off well water.
Summit students started the year today at Broad Street Elementary in the city of Butler.
