The public is invited to get a closer look at new social studies teaching materials for some students in the Butler Area School District.
At their Monday night meeting, the Butler Area School Board approved placing new social studies materials for grades 4, 5, and 6 on display for 30 days before purchasing at a cost of just over $33,000.
Although the curriculum does not include a textbook, it does include a print component in the form of a history-based newspaper or magazine as well as online components. A teacher’s manual is also available for public viewing at the Butler administrative offices.
The new curriculum will continue for five years for grades 4 and 5 covering Pennsylvania and national history respectively but only one year for grade 6 covering global history since those students will be transitioning to the current Intermediate School.
The district’s social studies committee has been working on the process of a new curriculum since before the pandemic began in February of 2020. New social studies materials for younger students could possibly be introduced in the next couple of years.
