The Butler Road Race will soon hand out its final academic scholarships to local high school cross country runners.
About $22,000 will be divided between 38 Butler County high school runners for them to use beginning this fall at a college or university. The money was raised at last year’s Butler Road Race.
It’s the last year for the scholarships because the race will be run by a different organization beginning this year. The Butler YMCA will now head the annual June event. Money raised will now go towards the YMCA’s annual Support Campaign, which offers financial help to those who can’t afford a YMCA membership.
The Butler Road Race is the longest consecutively held race in western Pennsylvania. More than $430,000 in scholarships have been awarded to local students since the race started in 1976.
This year’s race is June 23.
