Butler Area School District is purchasing a large number of computers for use by secondary students beginning next school year.
Monday night by unanimous vote, the board approved the purchase of 3,200 Chromebooks with educational licenses for a total cost of nearly $782,000.
According to Superintendent Dr. Brian White, students in grades 7 through 9 will keep their computers at school while students in grades 10 through 12 will be able to take theirs home. Current technology devices in use by the district will be available for use by elementary students with the possibility of purchasing new tech for them in the future.
Money to pay for this upgrade is expected to come from either a positive budget balance at the end of the current school year or budgetary reserves. The computers are expected to be delivered to the district near the end of June and be supported by Google through 2026.
