The Butler Transit Authority is considering a local base fare increase for the first time in 12 years.
At their Tuesday meeting, authority board members unanimously voted to advance a proposal that would increase the local base fare by 25 cents from $1.25 to $1.50. All local bus pass prices would remain the same as would all commuter fares and commuter bus pass prices.
According to Authority Executive Director John Paul, the sole reason for the increase is inflation which has increased by 36% since 2012 when the local base fare was last increased. The state mandates that local transit authorities have a policy that dictates when fare increases take place and the inflation rates have triggered the BTA policy for an increase.
A public hearing will be held on May 9th at 1 p.m. at the Transit Authority admin building on Hollywood Drive to receive comment about the proposed increase of local base fare. Those unable to make it to the hearing can submit written comments by mail or email by June 10th. The Authority will then take a vote to finalize the proposal at their June meeting before it would take effect July 1st.
